The History of Sandplay Therapy

Developed by Swiss Jungian Analyst Dora Kalff who was inspired by the work of Carl Jung and incorporated his concepts of collective consciousness and archetypes into the therapeutic approach. Drawing from Jungian Psychology, Kalff recognized the power of the unconscious in the process of healing and transformation.

Sandplay is a form of therapy that gives children the opportunity to portray, rather than verbalise, feelings and experiences often inaccessible and/or difficult to express in words. Sandplay also provides a balance to the extroverted, verbal, and outer-focused everyday world. It can lead to a more open and integrated world.

Sandplay helps maintain a place of integrity as well as a sanctuary for contact with the symbolic world out of which can emerge a healing experience. The use of symbols and sand gives form to the child’s perception of what is happening in his/her life.

Introduction to Sandplay Therapy

Around the walls of the Sandplay room are shelves filled with small figurines: little people, miniature household items, mythical figures, fairy tale figures, animals, trees, buildings, military equipment, model cars, skeletons, primitive dolls, funny things, enduring things and much, much more. In the middle of this treasure trove of figures – silently waiting to become symbols for your child’s inner world – is a Sandbox.

The sand calls out to be touched, moved and shaped. The child may begin their session by arranging the sand – heaping it into hills and valleys, rivers or coastlines. They play and add figurines, gradually seeing them as representing their feelings and unconscious drives. They may begin to understand themselves clearly, or they may simply begin to feel better. The figures on the shelve can represent parts of ourselves, they become significant symbols for us as inner meaning is projected onto them.

Sandplay is a hands-on expressive counselling and psychotherapy modality that has been used for well over fifty years. When a child creates a Sandbox scene they are telling a story. The story may be a combination of past, present and future. For example, it may be exploring a trauma that occurred long ago, while also processing how that story’s outcome can be changed.

One reason I love Sandplay work is that it could be helpful for all ages. The sandbox itself represents a whole world that reflects an inner state of being. Sandplay work can promote deep healing, processing and discovery of new outcomes. Sometimes verbal communication is difficult or does not feel right and Sandbox provides a non-verbal communication, it slows down communication too, giving time and space to organize thoughts, which can help practicing better impulse control.

Sandplay allows deeper aspects of the psyche to be worked with naturally and in safety, it is highly effective in reducing the emotional causes of difficult behaviours.

The play element of Sandplay is important. The freedom to create anything they wish enables the child to drop any defences they may have. The free method provides the child with a protected context in which unconscious resolution can take place more freely than in verbal articulation and exchanges.
